Early Warning Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore

11.27.2023 by Fred Berman //

If you or a loved one displays any one of these symptoms seek help immediately:

  1. Difficulty with everyday tasks.
  2. Getting lost.
  3. Confusion about time and place.
  4. Misplacing things.
  5. Troubling behavior.
  6. Forgetting memories.

If you or a loved display this specific behavior it is too late; you have lost your mind.

  1. Belief that a deranged narcissist sociopath who seeks the permanent destruction of our republic for his own personal gain should be president rather than imprisoned.

Thanksgiving Weekend is Over But Let’s Keep the Spirit of Gratitude Alive All Year!

11.26.2023 by Fred Berman //

Many of us had a day filled with friends and family and time to reflect on what is really important in life.  I think it is time we all stop our incessant whining about minor perceived slights or not getting everything we want how and when we want it.
Accepting that we may not get everything we want is part of being a human being.  Acceptance is the key to convert momentary happiness to enduring happiness.  It helps you move from feeling happy to actually being happy.

And more important; do as I say, not as I do because if you think I’m going to sit back and smile while a bunch of idiots run wild…Oh, that didn’t take long.

Sorry.  Every day in every way I’m getting better and better…

Harvard Health Publishing invites you to “Experience deeper joy, cheerful contentment, and unshakeable confidence.”  Thanks to the mental health experts at Harvard Medical School, you can discover dozens of easy-to-apply tips and techniques to help kindle more peace and joy in your life.

And the best part: you can get the print and eBook download of Positive Psychology for only $29.00.  I know that will make them happy too! The book will show you how to:

  • Get into the happiness “flow.”
  • Identify and build on your personal happiness-boosting inner strengths.
  • Magnify the happiness impact of gratitude.
  • Enhance your ability to recognize and celebrate the simple pleasures in your day.
  • ADDED BONUS:  What won’t make you happy!

OK.  I’ll spring for the $29.00.  But if, in the chapter on what won’t make you happy they list Money, I’ll shout “B.S.” and demand a full refund.  The wealthy have been trying to sell that to the masses for hundreds of years and that’s a ton of baloney I’m not buying!

How Stupid Do the Spammers Think We Are?

11.24.2023 by Fred Berman //

Every day, every single day, I receive 10 to 30 emails telling me that there is a package stuck in customs or a bad address on the label or possibly a high value item that requires a tax deposit and asking me to click on a link that will no doubt download a virus to shut down my computer requiring a large payment to fix.  To this point I have recognized the scams and not fallen into their trap.

The problem is I delete so many emails by rote that I feel I might be missing some real opportunities like the one I just caught.  Seconds before deleting it I read the sad tale of a Nigerian Prince that is trying to get some money out of the country to start a better life for him and his family.  For simply providing him an account in which to transfer the money he will give me a small percentage, small to him, but actually about $5 million dollars.

Frightening to think those rat-bastard scammers might have prevented me from getting paid a fortune for the small task of fronting a few thousand dollars.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

11.23.2023 by Fred Berman //

In homes across our great nation people are gathering today to celebrate the first winter the settlers spent in the new world.  It is a time for reflection; a time to take a short pause in our busy lives to express gratitude for all we have; (and by “we” I mean those that live above the poverty line).   In some homes we tell the story of how we massacred and tried to obliterate an entire indigenous race, herding the remaining decimated ranks into unforgiving lands called reservations.  But that’s only one way to look at this most cherished of holidays.

In Texas and Florida they celebrate the Thanksgiving Feast by remembering it differently.  They tell about how when the Mayflower landed the indigenous tribes were all packed and ready to move west to the barren regions they were hoping to call their home.  Thanksgiving dinner celebrates the Pilgrims honoring their hosts by assisting them in their impending move to the reservation.  The celebrants would be happy to show you where this is recorded in the history books if they hadn’t banned the books and, as they called it, “set the record straight.”

Ha Ha!  Just kidding.  Enjoy your turkey!

Help Available for Those Affected by Dysphagia

11.21.2023 by Fred Berman //

Dysphagia is difficulty swallowing — taking more time and effort to move food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach. It can be painful and in some cases swallowing is impossible.

Now there is real help in the form of support groups for those most affected by this terrible affliction; the husbands of dysphasia sufferers.  To find out she really can’t swallow can be a major lifestyle blow.  But take heart, one support group in San Juan Capistrano, California actually reported the swallows did return!

I never know where the line is until I’ve stepped over it.  Am I cancelled yet?

Mysteries of History

11.20.2023 by Fred Berman //

Lately I have been consumed with getting answers to life’s most puzzling questions, For example, did…

  1. Columbus sail the ocean blue in fourteen hundred and ninety-two? or
  2. Columbus sail the deep blue sea in fourteen hundred and ninety-three?

Perhaps we were not meant to know everything.  Let us simply be grateful we exist and appreciate what we do know.
For example, I was able to learn how life began and what happens when we pass and ascend to the next level.  That’s something!

20 Things Old People Love That The Rest Of Us Don’t Understand

11.19.2023 by Fred Berman //

Today I share with you another of the hundreds of unsolicited emails I receive daily.  This Lifestyles email with the above title attempts to give you insight into the minds of us senior citizens.  Since I am part of the first group mentioned, old people, I assume it is you that don’t understand so let me explain.  Here are a few things we like:

  1. Chatting aimlessly for hours – Yes, we actually prefer using our words to texting, especially when sitting next to someone.
  2. Telling anyone who will listen about their various ailments – Over-sharing is a rite of passage for seniors.
  3. Liking classical music – A true manifestation of beauty and joy only open to those that can appreciate the genius of Mozart, Beethoven and a few hundred others.
  4. Fine china & Silverware – Takes us back to a happier time when people cared about gracious living.
  5. Sending handwritten letters. – A skill that may experience a renewed interest when the world runs out of electricity.
  6. Crossword puzzles. – Purely a survival technique as they promote cognitive skills as we age.  “Dementia be gone!”
  7. Complaining about the younger generation – We are old, not dead.  We have to have some fun!
  8. Early bird specials – We are actually ahead of our time on this one.  Eating early is now in vogue as a younger generation understand the health and time management benefits.  And who does not appreciate saving a buck?

The only thing I don’t quite understand is number one on the list:
“Being the first to tell others when someone had died” – Not something I would ever enjoy unless, of course, it was about a corrupt politician or judge (aka a politician or judge).  Then I might even be a bit giddy while maintaining the proper somber demeanor…L (but not OL).

The Number One Exercise To Do As You Get Older

11.18.2023 by Fred Berman //

Good information from the AARP Advice for Seniors.  Can you guess what exercise they suggest?

It’s “The Squat” for leg strength.  I understand because when I did go to the gym regularly, many moons ago, I always hated “leg days” and was most likely to abbreviate my work out.  However their reasoning was a touch more specific.  They list the number one reason as maintaining the strength to get up off the toilet.  Really?  Really!

You’d think that would be the #2 reason.
