Wyatt Earp: Anthropologically Speaking

06.10.2024 by Fred Berman //

I have always been fascinated with Wyatt Earp’s life.  I have read every book, watched every movie and expanded my interest to the Old West in general.  My favorite reads are historical fiction;  A made up story but accurate in the details of life during that period of time.  If anyone shares my interest I’d forget about any film of Wyatt’s life before 1993’s Tombstone with Kurt Russell; fiction for sure but with a lot of truth about the essence of the man.  If you are looking for a biography I suggest Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend by Casey Tefertiller.

Wyatt Earp may not have always been politically correct but he did have a strict moral code to which he remained true throughout his life.  It may not have been easy to understand his actions, violent and self-serving at times but always fitting into his  code of conduct which, for the most part, was always there to keep the peace for the public good.  He had a warm heart but was overwhelmed by the raw cruelty of the time in which he lived.

It started me to wonder.  Might we be misunderstanding a former president who wants to return to office?  Could he be interested in the welfare of all the citizens of our country, not just those who praise him and bow to his will?  Is there a chance his narcissistic and vindictive personality masks a heart of gold that would unite us all and bring an age of peace and prosperity?  When he ignores social issues like access to affordable healthcare and equal tights for every citizen and spends his time explaining why he’d rather be electrocuted than eaten by a shark, is this an indication he will be a great leader, unlike what he was before?

The answer is No.  He is biological waste and needs to be flushed.  I am glad I was able to clear that up for you.

Why Does Time Seem to Speed Up as We Age?

06.09.2024 by Fred Berman //

We are already in the second week of June and 2024 is almost half over.  Commenting on how fast time flies as we age is a cliché, but also a fact.

As you know I am a man of science and constantly seeking to explain the mysteries of the Universe.  Having watched and re-watched all twelve seasons of The Big Bang Theory I have more than a smattering of knowledge of theoretical physics.  Therefore I am certain Robert Ornstein’s cognitive theory is, in fact, the best explanation.
As we age we experience fewer novel experiences which, in turn, means fewer new memories, thus accelerating our perception of time.  So it is not time that speeds up but how we perceive it.  Additionally, the slowing of our brain’s metabolic processes as we age could also contribute to the feeling of time speeding up.

But get hungry and the last 30 minutes before dinner seems interminable…or is it just me?

Life Hacks 101: Keep a Teabag in Your Car

06.08.2024 by Fred Berman //

When I read this one I felt so dumb; of course I should have been doing it all along.  How many times have you been out in your car, had a porcelain cup filled with steaming hot water only to realize you had no teabag?  Bummer!  After reading this I resolved to never again be caught on the road without a teabag!

Interestingly this was not the main reason for hauling tea about as explained in the article from recipereader.com.  They suggested keeping a teabag out of its wrapper in the car’s interior as it absorbs moisture and odors leaving a pleasant aroma.  I guess that’s a possible byproduct of the practice.

But next time you are out on the road enjoying a hot cuppa thanks to your spare teabag, think of me.  You’re welcome!

Nothing to See Here…Move Along!

06.07.2024 by Fred Berman //

I am giving myself a Time-Out!  I will sit in the corner and think about what i did.  I will come back tomorrow and not write any political drivel.  We are all a bunch of name calling adolescents and we are embarrassing ourselves on the world stage.
When I come-back tomorrow I will only talk about important stuff like the once-in-a-life-time sale going on at the Lamps-R-Us in your neighborhood.
No more politics***…even though I’m right!

***Obviously I meant no more THIS week.

“What a Fool Believes He Sees No Wise Man Has the Power to Reason Away.”

06.06.2024 by Fred Berman //

Wise lyrics from Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins.  We see it every day.

There are fools that are so filled with fear and hate they support a lying, cheating, narcissist with a bad comb-over, and all the facts about what he has done his whole life do not convince them he deserves their pity, not their vote.
And some fools even believe writing political mumbo-jumbo on Facebook might actually change the reader’s mind about anything.

Now that’s Crazy!

“Want a Stronger Core? Skip the Sit-Ups!”

06.05.2024 by Fred Berman //

This bit of wisdom from this month HEALTHbeat, Harvard Medical School’s Newsletter.

If this is true I must have a magnificent core as I have skipped the sit-ups my entire life.  Skimming the following pages I believe they makes some reference to something called planks, but I didn’t read any further.  I find that you can get the important information from an article in the first paragraph.

Back to my core workout. Have a nice day.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a Chronic Mental Health Condition

06.04.2024 by Fred Berman //

From The Harvard Medical Journal: NPD is characterized by the following:
  • Grandiosity: An exaggerated sense of self-importance, superiority, or entitlement.
  • Need for admiration: A constant need for attention and approval from others, often surrounding oneself with people who are willing to cater to this need.
  • Lack of empathy: An inability to understand or care about the feelings of others.

So let’s get him some help, not elect him President.  I hear they have some great doctors in Siberia.

“Cultivate the Ability to See the Ridiculous, and to Retain the Ability to Laugh.”

06.03.2024 by Fred Berman //

Good advice from Edgar Cayce, reading 2984-1.  Edgar Cayce was clairvoyant so although these words were written near 100 years ago he must have seen this year’s presidential election in his dreams.  |
Out of a population of over 300 million people we will have to choose either an 81 year old with a good heart who seemingly can barely open his eyes, or a 77 year old sleazebag hatemonger who loves no one but himself and lies incessantly.
This is ridiculous and there is nothing to do but laugh and hope we all wake up soon.

Tips to Lose Weight After Age 50

06.02.2024 by Fred Berman //

Our friends at the AARP are looking out for us again with more tips on how to lose weight a subject on almost everyone’s mind.  But I was a bit disappointed with the answers.  They were all the same tips you would give to a person of any age; count calories, exercise more, eat protein and whole grains and cut out the sugar. But they did include one last tip that makes the whole thing work for me; ” Don’t get discouraged if you slip. Everyone has lapses. When that happens, instead of giving up, do something to get back on track.”

So that’s what I do three times a day.  After each meal I forgive myself for the slip and get back on track.  No weight loss yet but I can feel myself getting healthier!

Nothing quite like the satisfaction of meeting one’s goals!

Katie Couric Media Picks the Best Father’s Day Gifts and One is Underpants!

06.01.2024 by Fred Berman //

Well, actually “Boxer Briefs” is the more acceptable term now.  But we boomers who are lovers of fine poetry and seeing underwear fondly remember the brilliantly crafted stanza:
I see London,
I see France.
I see  [Someone’s]
Underpants!
Ahh, memories…Back to business.  One of the suggestions for a great gift for Dad was a package of Mack Weldon Boxer Briefs, 3 pairs for $84.00.
My first thought was “who would pay $28.00 a pair for underpants that were not purchased at Victoria’s Secret?”  But then I read the description and was intrigued.
“These boxer briefs hold everything in place without the legs rolling up or the waistband slipping down. They’re buttery soft and remain cool and comfortable all day long,”
So for those of you in a quandary as to what to buy me for a gift I offer this suggestion to relieve the stress of such a critical decision.  Don’t mention it!

P.S. Linda say’s I should get a hobby as I have way too much idle time on my hands.  I like to think of it as my “creative time-out!”
