It’s More Than a Gut Feeling, It’s Two Brains!

05.15.2023 by Fred Berman //

Research shows that the gut and brain are connected, a partnership called the gut-brain axis. The two are linked through biochemical signaling between the nervous system in the digestive tract, called the enteric nervous system, and the central nervous system, which includes the brain. The primary information connection between the brain and gut is the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in the body.
The gut has been called a “second brain” because it produces many of the same neurotransmitters as the brain does, like serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid, all of which play a key role in regulating mood. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of serotonin is made in the digestive tract.

Here is where science finds the greatest difference between male and female of the species.  While the brain and the gut are two strong influencers, a women’s common sense is more likely to overridden by her heart.  In the male, brains, gut feelings and common sense will definitely be overridden by their strongest influencer, their genitals.

This is science folks.  I don’t make this stuff up…

Vote “Giraffe” for Congress!

05.14.2023 by Fred Berman //

Giraffes are the only mammal without vocal chords.

What a boon to America if congress people were unable to speak.  No more lies.  They can just “STFU,” sit back and collect their illegal graft in silence…
like the justices of the Supreme Court.

Advice from Bill Gates…And Me

05.13.2023 by Fred Berman //

Bill Gates commencement address to the graduates at Northern Arizona University included the following 5 pearls of wisdom:

  1. Your life isn’t a one-act play.
  2. You’re never too smart to be confused.
  3. Gravitate toward work that solves an important problem.
  4. Don’t underestimate the power of friendship.
  5. You’re not a slacker if you cut yourself some slack.

He makes it so difficult.
Life is simple::

  1. Get a job
  2. Pay your own way.
  3. Pay your taxes.
  4. Smoking bad; exercise good.
  5. Returning to your parents couch is not an option.

When do I get to do a commencement speech?  Hear that Harvard?

10 Ways to Increase Your Happiness

05.12.2023 by Fred Berman //

Google the above statement and you will find multiple articles with mostly the same suggestions.  But what I found interesting in the one I read was a banner ad streaming along the bottom of the screen.  It was from The Neptune Society offering the low cost option of cremation and burial at sea.

Talk about covering all bases!  If the first 10 don’t work take comfort in the knowledge there is another option.

And Now a Word from Kong Qiu

05.11.2023 by Fred Berman //

“The way of a superior man is threefold: Virtuous, he is free from anxieties; wise, he is free from perplexities; bold, he is free from fear”. —  Kong Qiu aka Confucius.

“And if a man or woman has not a smidge of any of the above virtues there is only one course of action where their total lack of courage and morality will allow them to flourish: Politics.”  – Me

PSA Alert: There May Be Something Worth Watching on Netflix?

05.10.2023 by Fred Berman //

Dear Common People:
I just saw that Netflix is producing a show based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “All the Light We Cannot See,” one of the best books ever!
So if you have Netflix and you can tear yourself away from Seinfeld reruns to actually do something of value, I suggest you read the novel by Anthony Doerr in preparation for what I hope will be a rare gem in the brain-rotting barren wasteland that is television.

Pretentious?  Moi?

I Fought the Staphylococcus Aureus and the Staphylococcus Aureus Won, Almost!

05.09.2023 by Fred Berman //

My apologies to my Fan Club, all 3 of you, for my radio silence.  I have been in the hospital, or what I like to call “The Northwest Magic Kingdom” because it is so much fun!  To you who are not Doctors or the equivalent, that is, regular viewers of Gray’s Anatomy, you might not recognize the name staphylococcus aureus as one of the common staph infections.
This nasty stuff gets in your blood and runs wild, thinking it can do whatever it wants. Staphylococcus aureus the bacterial world’s equivalent of the Second Amendment Morons (S.A.M.s), gun nuts that think they can do whatever they want and that guns should not be regulated in any way.  Antibiotics are knocking out my infection.  Now if we can get some antibiotic legislation to try allowing society a touch of regulation.  Isn’t being regular what good health is all about?

I’m Back Baby!

EDITORS NOTE:  In order to return to posting daily, H.R. made Fred bring notes from my doctors.  To fill the empty days on his site he posted a small selection of the notes written for him by his army of doctors.  (P.S. Nurses are the most amazing people on the planet.  More on that later.)

A Note From My Doctor #2

05.07.2023 by Fred Berman //

Please excuse Fred’s absence.
He apparently ate some bad Crab Nebula at the chic Café Black Hole in the Andromeda Strain.
Don’t let it eclipse his previous stellar work.
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson
