Bumble Bees Are Down for a Little “Playtime!”

12.11.2022 by Fred Berman //

Bumblebees are hard workers!  They help to maintain and operate a nest while also pollinating plants and flowers.  But it now appears they do much more than that.  In study published in Animal Behaviour, researchers found that bumblebees “play.”

“The team observed 45 bumblebees in an arena and gave them two pathway options to choose from: one unobstructed path led to a feeding zone, and the other opened to an area with wooden balls. Throughout the experiment, the bumblebees were observed choosing the latter pathway and rolling the wooden balls a number of times, then returning to roll them again.  A total of 910 ball-rolling actions by 45 bumblebees were recorded. Individual bees rolled balls between 1 and 44 times on an experimental day, and between 1 and 117 times across the whole duration of the experiment,” the study reads.

Lead researcher Samadi Galpayage wrote “It goes to show, once more, that despite their little size and tiny brains, they are more than small robotic beings.”

THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH!  It’s not our politicians’ tiny brains that are the problem.  It’s that they have NO BALLS!

The First Nobel Prize was Awarded on This Day in 1901

12.10.2022 by Fred Berman //

The first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace on December 10, 1901. The ceremony came on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite and other high explosives.

Most of us today can name very few, if any, of previous winners; the exception being the more recent co-receivers of the Nobel Prize in Physics, Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler and Dr. Sheldon Cooper.  The married couple solved one of the great mysteries of the universe when their innovative research proved String Theory.  In physics, string theory is a theoretical framework in which the point-like particles of particle physics are replaced by one-dimensional objects called strings.

To put it simply it is the fact that if you try and pull off, rather than cut with a scissors, a loose string on any garment it will lead to the eventual unravelling of that garment.

“Aging is an Extraordinary Process…”

12.09.2022 by Fred Berman //

…whereby you become the person that you always should have been.”  A brilliant thought from David Bowie.
Ziggy Stardust was so right.  I am aging and feel the transition happening.  I hope I make it long enough to become the person I should have been; George Clooney.

Save the Forrest by Renting a Live Christmas Tree!

12.08.2022 by Fred Berman //

“The scent of pine is a holiday joy. And while artificial trees have surpassed live trees as the most popular Christmas tree of choice in the U.S., there are 25-30 million real Christmas trees sold in the U.S. annually,” according to the National Christmas Tree Association.
A new tradition has emerged in Europe and the USA the last few years.  You may now rent a living Christmas tree for the holidays and return it when the Holiday is over. This is beneficial for so many reasons including:
     *  Extreme weather conditions have lessened the availability and raised the price.
     *  No more problems or waste disposing of the used tree.
An added benefit not mentioned in the advertising is that with a living tree in the house it may lessen the need to take your dog for a walk; a real plus when the temps drop below freezing!

“This Too Shall Pass” The Wisdom of King Solomon

12.07.2022 by Fred Berman //

It is generally accepted by most, (notable exception famous holocaust deniers Mel Gibson and Nick Fuentes), that King Solomon was among the wisest of all kings.

While not found in The Bible itself, Jewish folklore credits King Solomon with this wise saying.  .  Its meaning: nothing is permanent, an unpleasant or difficult situation is bound to eventually end.  Legend is that when a sultan asked him to provide a statement that would always be true in good times or bad, Solomon responded, “This too shall pass.”

It is the thought that keeps me going every time I see or read about Politics.  Time for it to pass; let’s move it along!

I Am an Ecclesiastes Man Myself!

12.06.2022 by Fred Berman //

The Bible may be an imperfect guide written by imperfect men but I believe we all can find passages that provide comfort in guidance somewhere within the pages of the Good Book.  Being an Old Testament man I have found a guide to the spiritual existence in Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes 8:15.  “I therefore praised enjoyment. For the only good a man can have under the sun is to eat and drink and enjoy himself.”  (“Enjoy himself” has also been often translated as “be merry.”)

Who can argue with that?

This Page Left Intentionally Blank

12.05.2022 by Fred Berman //

And when I say Page I am referring to my brain.  As I am currently visiting relatives in Southern California, my sage wisdom is on hiatus.  But in an effort to provide value for your visit to this site I will recycle two critical bits of advice:

  1. Don’t take any wooden nickels.
  2. Be good. And if you can’t be good, Be Careful!

Your unbridled laughter is thanks enough.

I’ll get back to you when I board the Clipper to America in Lisbon.

On This Day in 1947 Brando Opened on Broadway in “Streetcar”

12.03.2022 by Fred Berman //

A Streetcar Named Desire introduced the world to a 23 year-old brooding genius actor, Marlon Brando.
I myself, as thousands of other masculine youths, have modeled my life after the most loveable and relatable of fictional characters ever;  Brando’s Stanley Kowalski.
All I can say is:“STELLAaaaaaaaa!” Oops, I mean…“LINDAaaaaaaaa!”

You’re a Jerk! I’m “Salty” So I “Ghosted” You!

12.02.2022 by Fred Berman //

94% of Americans use slang.  The list of 2022’s most used slang is out.  The most popular slang terms remain “ghosted” (to cut off communication) and “salty” (angry).  Runners-up include the words catfish, low-key, bomb and savage.

Another word that is used by a great percentage of Americans is Douchebag   It is widely believed that this did not make the list because it is used primarily to describe a political figure; more specifically a failed ex-president residing in Palm Beach, Florida.

See how I snuck that in?
