A Walk in Paris

10.03.2019 by Fred Berman //

Early, early morning
My first steps in Paris out of the Hotel Beauchamp.
The sky slowly gathers the day’s first rays, spreads them sparingly,
the air almost cool but damp,
the searing August heat, building,
teasing, planning a grand entrance.

Left, right, then straight ahead to the Champs-Élysée.
A stranger approaches, I try to catch her eye to smile.
My heart rises but  her eyes remain fixed beyond me.

Left or right?
The Pont Alexandre III or the Arc de Triomphe?
I glance in both directions for a sign.
The breeze scoffs its impatience,
gives me a firm push to the left.
“Sacré bleu, the grandeur of the bridge awaits you.”

Smiling and keeping
a friendly grip on my shoulder, an audible laugh
as if sharing a joke with old friends.
I do not speak French but, je comprende, somehow I understand every word.
Mon ami, move along quickly or the moment will be lost,
the tourists will be out soon!

Notes On Retirement

07.31.2019 by Fred Berman //

I  woke  this  morning,  early as usual,  the  sun squeezing
Out a reluctant ray,  like a drip from  an  old  leaky faucet.
My day is set, filled with my comforting routines, each to
Its own time. An idea, new-liquid-scary-exciting explodes
in my head. Today without planning, and no expectations
of an organized, orderly outcome I will try- DO something.

Different.

The Wall

07.31.2019 by Fred Berman //

I dream about the south face of the wall. In I see a young Diego Rivera
With Frida Kahlo, pallets dripping rainbow colors; they paint.
He proud people and history, brown farmers, workers, warriors, temples, leaders.
She, people, watermelons, self-portraits in bright native dress or naked, her soul.
Expressing her pain, her optimism, life’s tragedies, divine hope.

I see the wall’s north side while fully awake. Stacks of crumbling bricks,
drab grays of ice and hate. A dark shadowy silhouette, an outline of fear
forged by desire to preserve an idyllic time that is only imagined.
A stark blank surface, blocking light but sending its message, “Be afraid!”

Ordainment

06.17.2019 by Fred Berman //

After many years of study, deep reflection, examination of the human spirit and an in-depth (although very one-sided) conversation with a burning bush, combined with their internet acceptance of a $39.00 payment on my American Express Card, I have gratefully accepted the ordainment of the Universal Life Church. (If you wish to pursue the rigorous requirements to be ordained tell them I sent you and you may qualify for the “Friends and Family Discount!”)

I am now qualified to speak authoritatively about any and all of the religions in the world.

In the interest of full disclosure I must admit I was absent for the lecture on the core beliefs of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East, and will not include them in my musings. Apologies to those who are now sighing heavily with disappointment.

Top Books

01.30.2019 by Fred Berman //

I read fiction almost exclusively (we get too much reality on a daily basis) and these are books that I love and in many cases, just one of many wonderful books by the author.  In the interest of time and space I only put one from each but am always happy to discuss books and trade recommendations. I will happily wax poetic for hours on any subject and am available for Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Revenge Gifts for cranky relatives that need to be taught a lesson. WARNING:  If I appear at such an event you will be cut out of the will so use this technique only as a last resort.
